RIOT 'FIRE DOWN UNDER' CANDY371
THE SAYING GOES that you can’t keep a good band down. For New York based five piece Riot that maxim was not only true but hugely understated. Against all odds Riot fought for the right to be heard by overcoming huge obstacles and battling a ferociously indifferent industry. That they came through the wars intact, with a musical legacy and integrity to match is arguably a minor miracle and one not lost on their legions of loyal fans. Riot’s early struggles have been fully documented. Their two previous albums (especially 1980’s ‘Narita’), made for a riveting preamble for the appearance of ‘Fire Down Under’. ‘Fire Down Under’, originally issued in 1981 turned out to be the band’s creative zenith, unleashing a brace of tracks that placed Riot in the upper echelons of hard rock nirvana. Produced, once again, by their production/management team, in New York City, the record explodes with deadly intent. Tracks such as ‘Outlaw’, ‘Swords And Tequila’, ‘Run For Your Life’ and the title track take no prisoners, allowing vocalist Guy Speranza and guitarist Mark Reale to shine like diamonds. SHADOW KING 'S/T' CANDY335
THE FORMATION OF Shadow King presented a unique and exciting opportunity, the band consisting of a veritable cavalcade of super-hot talent from a number of key musical touch stones. Vocalist Lou Gramm had propelled Foreigner to major success over two decades, whilst guitarist Vivian Campbell had been an integral member of Dio. The rhythm section of Bruce Turgon and Kevin Valentine had also served in a number of highly respected outfits, including Warrior and Steve Stevens’s Atomic Playboys, so the creation of Shadow King was greeted with huge anticipation. Signed to Atlantic Records, home of Foreigner, the quartet were paired with acclaimed producer Keith Olsen (Whitesnake, Heart, Ozzy Osbourne) and recorded in Los Angeles. It was a productive pairing, with the results displaying not only a brace of killer songs, but also a sonic sheen that looked set to propel the band into the melodic rock super league. But sadly that was not to be. Check out ‘tracks such as ‘What Would It Take’, ‘Anytime, Anywhere’ and the anthem ‘Once Upon A Time’. MALICE 'LICENSE TO KILL' CANDY353
FOR A BRIEF moment in time it looked as if Los Angeles based power metal band Malice would assume a position as one of the leading bands of the era, following hot on the heels of big seller’s such as RATT, Mötley Crüe and Dokken. However, because of various frustrations and delays the band’s debut album ‘In The Beginning…’ largely underachieved, leaving them cast adrift as followers rather than trend setters. This time around the band played it hard and fast, recruiting seasoned British producer Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T, Savatage), a man used to cranking up the energy level and making records that not only sounded great but were also on-point. Issued in 1986, on the Atlantic label, the album far surpassed the quality of their debut record, attracting stellar reviews and setting the scene for intensive live work. With its razor-sharp guitar work and concise song writing the record boasts a number of highlights, including ‘Against The Empire’, ‘Chain Gang Woman’ and the title track itself, arguably the band’s finest moment SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR’S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED AUDIO, 16 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 4,000 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM INCLUDING NEW INTERVIEWS AND RARE PHOTOS TRACK LISTING: 1. SINISTER DOUBLE 2. LICENSE TO KILL 3. AGAINST THE EMPIRE 4. VIGILANTE 5. CHAIN GANG WOMAN 6. CHRISTINE 7. MURDER 8. BREATHIN’ DOWN YOUR NECK 9. CIRCLE OF FIRE
SHAW BLADES 'HALLUCINATION' CANDY351
WHEN IT COMES to extracurricular collaborations and spin-off bands, they are, more often than not, prone to malfunction or disappointment, the sum of the parts normally being far inferior to the main attraction. In the case of Shaw Blades this wasn’t the case as the partnership produced a surprisingly attractive musical communion, with enough of their familiar styles mixing with a fresh approach. The collaborators in question here are guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw, previously a lynch pin with multiplatinum pomp rockers Styx, and bassist Jack Blades who infiltrated the charts as a member of melodic rockers Night Ranger. The two initially worked together (alongside Ted Nugent) as members of the platinum selling hard rock band Damn Yankees, before embarking, during a lull in DY activities, as the high profile Shaw Blades partnership. It was, in many respects, a marriage made in heaven, the two musicians being uniquely compatible, and they produced songs of a timeless and compelling nature. Enlisting the help of producer Don Gehman (best known for his work with John Cougar Mellencamp) and issued in 1995, the duo set about constructing a record that was less full-on hard rock and more rootsy. SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR’S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED AUDIO, 16 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 4,000 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, INCLUDING NEW INTERVIEWS AND RARE PHOTOS TRACK LISTING: 1. MY HALLUCINATION 2. I’LL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU 3. COME TO BE MY FRIEND 4. DON’T TALK TO ME ANYMORE 5. I STUMBLE IN 6. BLUE CONTINENTAL 7. DOWN THAT HIGHWAY 8. HOW YOU GONNA GET USED TO THIS 9. THE NIGHT GOES ON 10. I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOU 11. THE END
